WORLD POPULATION DAY: EXPERTS ADVOCATE CREDIBLE CENSUS, GREATER INVESTMENT IN NIGERIA’S YOUTH
Population experts are urging Nigeria to strengthen its population data systems and increase investment in the country’s growing youth population, describing young people as the nation’s greatest asset for sustainable development and long-term economic growth.
The call was made in Abuja as the National Population Commission (NPC), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Nigeria Office, flagged off activities to commemorate the 2026 World Population Day with a media briefing ahead of the global observance on July 11.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the National Population Commission highlighted key government initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at empowering young Nigerians.
The theme for the 2026 World Population Day is “Realizing the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People – Today and for the Future.” The commemoration underscores the importance of credible demographic data, evidence-based planning, and policies that empower young people to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.
