FG LAUNCHES DIASPORA HEALTH PROGRAMME TO BOOST HEALTHCARE DELIVERY IN NIGERIA

The Federal Government has unveiled the Nigerians in Diaspora Advance Health Programme (NiDAH-P), an initiative aimed at leveraging the expertise, experience and resources of Nigerians living abroad to strengthen healthcare delivery in the country.

The programme, a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), is designed to create a structured platform for greater diaspora participation in addressing challenges within Nigeria’s health sector.

The initiative seeks to transform healthcare brain drain into brain gain by encouraging Nigerian medical professionals abroad, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, researchers and medical technologists, to contribute their knowledge and skills towards improving healthcare outcomes.

Nigeria’s health sector continues to face challenges such as shortages of skilled professionals, limited access to specialised medical services, increasing demand for quality healthcare and the migration of health workers to other countries.

Through NiDAH-P, the government hopes to promote specialist medical outreach, telemedicine services, healthcare training, research partnerships, mentorship programmes and investment opportunities in health infrastructure and technology.

The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s growing recognition of the Nigerian diaspora as a strategic partner in national development.

Health experts have noted that engaging Nigerian professionals abroad can support knowledge transfer, strengthen local capacity and introduce global best practices into the country’s healthcare system.

The programme is also expected to encourage collaboration between healthcare institutions in Nigeria and international medical organisations, while providing opportunities for diaspora professionals to contribute beyond financial remittances.

However, details on the implementation framework, participation process, funding structure and timelines are expected to be provided as the programme progresses.

The Federal Government says NiDAH-P represents a step towards building a stronger, more connected healthcare system through global expertise and local innovation.
