NHRC CONDEMNS DEATH OF MINERS IN NSCDC CUSTODY

The National Human Rights Commission has commenced a preliminary investigation to unravel the circumstances leading to the death of about 37 suspected artisanal miners who reportedly died while in NSCDC custody in Minna, Niger State.

Executive Secretary the commission Tony Ojukwu, has condemned the incident and called for an independent forensic autopsy and preservation of evidence. Ojukwu also urged for transparency in the investigation.

He emphasised that allegations of illegal mining do not remove the constitutional rights of detainees and appealed for calm, assuring that accountability and appropriate remedies would follow if human-rights violations are established.
