EMERGENCY RESPONSE: FG. TO FINALISE PLAN ON 112 INITIATIVE

The Federal Government is set to deepen engagement with governors and emergency responders on the adoption of 112 as the national emergency number across Nigeria.

This is coming following a meeting between a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission, led by the Chairman of its Governing Board, Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe and the Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.

The development comes days after the National Economic Council approved the adoption of 112 as the national emergency number to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency response system and build a unified, coordinated national response to emergencies as Vice President Kashim Shettima directed a roadmap be developed to ensure the nation adopts a single, unified emergency number, in line with global best practices.

The Chairman Governing Council of the Nigerian Communications Commission Idris Olorunnimbe said the NCC is leveraging technology and has established about 35 Emergency Communications Centres nationwide, as the nation needs greater commitment to provide the necessary support and maintain the infrastructure the Commission has put in place to ensure that the centres function optimally.
