Kalu Defends State Police, Says Benefits Outweigh Risks

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the proposed establishment of state police will strengthen security across the country, insisting that its benefits far outweigh any potential risks.

Speaking on the passage of the State Police Bill, Kalu dismissed concerns that governors could abuse the system, noting that the proposed constitutional amendment contains adequate safeguards to regulate the operations of state police.

According to him, the bill clearly defines the powers, responsibilities and limits of state police formations, while also providing for national minimum operational standards to ensure accountability and professionalism.

The Deputy Speaker said the proposed framework is designed to enhance grassroots security, improve intelligence gathering and complement the efforts of federal security agencies in tackling insecurity.

Kalu further disclosed that the existing Police Act would be repealed and re-enacted to provide the legal framework required for the implementation and effective operation of state police across the federation.
