XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS :HOUSE OF REPS SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR LOSSES SUFFERED BY NIGERIANS
The House of Representatives has called for an investigation into xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, with a view to determining the losses suffered by victims and pursuing appropriate compensation.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Representative Babajimi Benson, the House mandated its Committees on Foreign Affairs and Integration in Africa to investigate and ascertain the extent to which the South African government may have been complicit in acts of xenophobic violence against Nigerians.
Lawmakers also directed the committees to estimate casualties, economic losses and abandoned properties resulting from the attacks.
The House further recommended diplomatic and legal measures to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable in line with international human rights obligations.
The committees are expected to submit recommendations that will guide efforts to secure justice and compensation for affected Nigerians.
