Benue Police Crack Down on Illegal Checkpoints, Revenue Collectors

The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Cletus Nwadiogbu, has ordered the immediate dismantling of all illegal checkpoints, roadblocks and unauthorized revenue collection points across the state in a move aimed at improving public safety and ending the harassment of motorists.

The directive affects major routes across the state, particularly federal highways including Makurdi-Lafia, Makurdi-Gboko, Ugbema-Vandeikya, Gboko-Aliade and Otukpo-Otukpa roads.

According to the police command, the action is intended to ensure the free flow of traffic, curb extortion and eliminate other unlawful activities often encountered by commuters on the affected roads.

Nwadiogbu directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Unit Commanders to enforce the order immediately within their jurisdictions.

The police commissioner clarified that only security checkpoints officially approved by relevant authorities and manned by authorized security personnel with proper identification would be allowed to operate in the state.

He urged residents and road users to promptly report cases of extortion, harassment or suspicious checkpoints to the nearest police station or security agency for swift intervention.

Nwadiogbu warned that individuals found violating the directive would face disciplinary and legal sanctions in line with existing laws.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring safer and more secure roads across Benue State.
