D-8 Charts Green Path to Sustainable MSME Growth

The D-8 Organization has emphasized the need for stronger regional cooperation and improved access to finance to enable Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) become more competitive and sustainable.

Speaking during a special webinar to mark International MSME Day, D-8 Secretary-General, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, said MSMEs remain the engine of growth and backbone of member economies, noting that the transition to greener economies presents vast opportunities for expansion and innovation.

The virtual event attracted more than 40 participants from D-8 member countries, including Nigeria. Discussions focused on green innovation, sustainable tourism, digital transformation and strategies for strengthening small businesses across the bloc.

Participants highlighted the benefits of circular business practices, the use of Artificial Intelligence for inventory management, and Malaysia’s tourism development model as viable pathways for MSMEs to integrate into global value chains. Representatives from Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Bangladesh also shared initiatives on green industrialisation, climate-focused partnerships and sustainable supply chains aimed at driving long-term economic growth.
