Police Foil Bandit Attack in Sokoto, Recover AK-47 Rifle

The Sokoto State Police Command has neutralised a suspected armed bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition following a foiled attack on Daraye Village in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the operation was carried out in response to a distress call received at about 1:35 a.m. on Saturday, reporting that a large group of heavily armed bandits had invaded the community.

The statement said operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams were immediately deployed to reinforce officers at the Wamakko Divisional Police Headquarters. The security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to flee into nearby forests with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

During a subsequent search of the area, one suspected bandit was neutralised, while an AK-47 rifle and a magazine loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered. The police said confidence-building patrols have been intensified in the area, while neighbouring divisions have been placed on high alert to intercept fleeing suspects. Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the command’s commitment to combating banditry and protecting lives and property across Sokoto State.
