EMERGENCY SITTING: REPS EXTEND BUDGET TIMELINE BY THREE MONTHS

The House of Representatives has approved an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget, moving the deadline from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026.

The decision was taken during an emergency plenary session of the House, which reconvened from its annual recess to align with the Senate’s earlier approval of a three-month extension for the 2025 budget implementation.

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, presided over the consideration of the Appropriations (Repeal and Enactment) Act Amendment Bill No. 2 of 2026 during proceedings held in the Committee of Supply, following its first and second readings.

Lawmakers said the extension would ensure continuity in capital project execution and prevent disruptions in ongoing infrastructure and development projects across the country.

Meanwhile, the Speaker also announced the appointment of new chairpersons for some standing committees of the House following vacancies created by changes in the leadership of the Minority Caucus.

The House said the committee reshuffle was aimed at strengthening legislative oversight and improving efficiency in parliamentary duties.
