FG SEEKS GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP TO IMPROVE SANITATION, TACKLE FLOODING CHALLENGES

The Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration with the international community to bridge sanitation gaps, improve access to safe water and address the recurring challenge of flooding across Africa.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, made the call while leading Nigeria’s delegation to the ongoing Africa Water Forum in N’Djamena, Republic of Chad.

Professor Utsev said stronger partnerships are needed to enhance sanitation services in urban and rural communities and advance sustainable water access for millions of people.

Speaking at the forum, the Minister highlighted the progress recorded by Nigeria in expanding access to safe and sustainable water under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He disclosed that about 67 per cent of Nigerians currently have access to clean and sustainable water.

While drawing attention to the impact of flooding in Nigeria, Professor Utsev attributed the recurring challenge partly to climate change, noting that it has caused severe consequences for families, farmlands and livelihoods.

He stressed the need for robust global cooperation to develop effective solutions to mitigate the effects of flooding and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges.

The Minister explained that the Federal Government is implementing policies anchored on three key pillars — water for people, water for food and water for the planet — aimed at accelerating equitable access to safe water and sanitation services across the country.

He also informed delegates that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has established a dedicated Ministerial Committee to develop a National Water Compact.

According to him, the initiative, which involves collaboration with states, is designed to define Nigeria’s water sector vision, identify required financing and provide a framework for development partners and private sector investors to align their support.

Professor Utsev reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving water security, sanitation and sustainable management of water resources for national development.
