Federal Government Pushes Clean Cooking Energy at Grassroots

YENAGOA — The Federal Government has flagged off the Decade of Gas National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme in Bayelsa State as part of efforts to expand access to clean, safe and affordable cooking energy across Nigeria.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, inaugurated the programme and called on stakeholders in the gas sector to support the Federal Government’s initiative aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian household has access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Speaking at the event, the Minister said the programme is a key component of the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas agenda, designed to accelerate the transition from traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and charcoal to cleaner energy sources.

Ekpo noted that widespread adoption of LPG would improve public health by reducing exposure to harmful smoke, protect the environment through reduced deforestation, and stimulate sustainable economic development.

As part of the programme, the Federal Government distributed free gas cylinders to 320 women in Bayelsa State, a move aimed at encouraging the use of clean cooking energy at the grassroots level.

The initiative is expected to benefit millions of households nationwide by making LPG more accessible and affordable, particularly for vulnerable and low-income families.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening LPG penetration across the country and ensuring that the benefits of clean energy reach communities in all parts of Nigeria.
