Food Security: NiMet DG Pushes AI-Powered Weather Services

The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Charles Anosike, has called for increased investment in weather observation systems across Africa to unlock the full potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting and climate services.

Prof. Anosike made the call while participating in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council Side Event on “Scaling AI-Powered Weather Services for Farmers” held at the WMO Headquarters.

He stressed that effective AI-driven weather forecasting depends on the availability of quality observations and reliable data, noting that addressing data gaps across the continent remains critical to improving climate services and food security.

The NiMet boss also highlighted the agency’s efforts to integrate AI into its operations, revealing that an AI Research Team was inaugurated in January 2026 to drive the adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in weather prediction and climate services.

According to him, NiMet is currently developing the MeteoAI platform and evaluating advanced AI weather prediction models to enhance forecasting, climate prediction, early warning systems and other meteorological services. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies to improve weather information delivery and support farmers and vulnerable communities across Africa.
