Health Ministry, ICPC Launch Joint Task Team to Tackle Corruption in Health Sector
The Federal Government says corruption in Nigeria’s health sector can no longer be treated as merely a financial offence, warning that the diversion of healthcare funds can cost lives.
The warning came as the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, inaugurated a Joint Task Team to identify corruption risks, close loopholes and strengthen accountability in the health sector.
Inaugurating the team, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the initiative marks a shift from reacting to corruption after funds are lost to preventing abuse before it occurs.
He described the task team as an “instrument for institutional change,” while highlighting measures being taken by the ministry to strengthen accountability in areas involving significant public expenditure.
The Joint Task Team will provide a platform for the two institutions to identify corruption risks, strengthen compliance and improve accountability across health programmes and institutions nationwide, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that every naira invested in healthcare delivers value to Nigerians.
