NIGERIA WINS UN CEDAW SEAT

Nigeria has recorded another diplomatic win at the United Nations as.President Bola Tinubu’s nominee, Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia, has been elected to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, CEDAW.

She defeated candidates from eight other countries after a vote involving 123 member states.

CEDAW is a key UN human rights body that monitors how countries implement the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and works to advance gender equality worldwide.

In a statement by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, noted that this is Nigeria’s third international election win under the current administration. He linked it to President Tinubu’s push for stronger diplomatic engagement.

Eghobamien-Mshelia will serve a two-year term. Ambassador Ibrahim described the win as a boost for Nigerian women, adding that Nigeria’s next target is a seat on the UN Security Council next year.
