Oluremi Tinubu Advocates Prevention, Community Action Against Drug Abuse

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the need for greater investment in prevention strategies to combat drug abuse and dismantle organized criminal networks.

In her message marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the First Lady stated that education, awareness, family support and community engagement remain some of the most effective tools in addressing substance abuse and related criminal activities.

The commemoration is themed, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention. Break the Cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime.”

Mrs. Tinubu noted that tackling the drug menace requires a collective effort from all segments of society, stressing that preventive measures are crucial in protecting young people from the dangers of substance abuse.

She renewed her call on governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations and civil society groups to strengthen their commitment to creating safe, inclusive and supportive environments where children and young people can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The First Lady also urged stakeholders to sustain advocacy, care and support systems aimed at preventing drug abuse and breaking the cycle of organised crime.

According to her, sustained collaboration and community-based interventions are essential to safeguarding the future of young people and building healthier, more secure societies.
