SENATE CONFIRMS PROFESSOR FASINA AS NON-CAREER AMBASSADOR

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador following a request by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which screened the nominee.

A mild drama, however, trailed the presentation of the committee’s report when Senator Adams Oshiomhole raised a point of order concerning a petition against Professor Fasina by a colleague at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

The Senate, after considering the matter and the committee’s findings, noted that the nominee had been cleared of the allegations of sexual harassment by both the authorities of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti and the Nigeria Police Force.

Following the clearance, the Senate proceeded with the legislative process and confirmed Professor Fasina’s appointment as ambassador.

In another development, the Senate rescinded its earlier passage of the Proceeds of Crime Act Amendment Bill to allow for adjustments to some provisions that could affect the effective implementation of the proposed legislation.

The Senate said the move was aimed at ensuring clarity and addressing concerns before the bill progresses further.
