State Police Bill: House rescinds previous version passed, receives latest executive bill
President Bola Tinubu has transmitted to the House of Representatives a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide the legal framework for the establishment of state police across the country.
Consequently, the House of Representatives has rescinded its earlier version of the State Police Bill, passed in June, to consider the latest Constitution Alteration Bill from the Executive.
In a letter read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, during Tuesday’s abridged plenary, President Tinubu said the latest Constitution Alteration Bill is an improvement on the version earlier considered by the House and is intended to ensure the effective operation of a dual policing system in the country.
The Executive Bill on State Police scaled second reading on the floor of the House and was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration.
The proposed legislation is expected to generate further input and debate among stakeholders on the structure, powers, funding, oversight, and operational safeguards for state police.
