TEAM NIGERIA TARGETS COMMONWEALTH GAMES GLORY AFTER WORLD CUP SETBACK

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed confidence that Team Nigeria will make the nation proud at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, pledging a medal-winning performance to cushion the disappointment of the country’s absence from the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, gave the assurance during a presidential send-off ceremony for Team Nigeria at the State House, Abuja. The event was hosted on behalf of President Bola Tinubu by Femi Gbajabiamila.

Addressing the athletes, Gbajabiamila commended the efforts made by the Federal Government toward their preparation and urged them to surpass Nigeria’s performance at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He charged the contingent to compete with determination while upholding the values of integrity, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Dikko described the Glasgow Games as an opportunity for Nigeria to return to the global sporting spotlight, noting that adequate preparations had been made to ensure the athletes are fully equipped for the competition. He expressed optimism that the team would deliver strong performances across various events.

A total of 72 athletes will represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026, as the nation seeks another memorable outing on the international stage.
