UNGA 81st: NIGERIA, EU DEEPEN MIGRATION COOPERATION, ADVANCE RE-ADMISSION AGREEMENT
On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Nigeria and the European Union have renewed efforts to strengthen cooperation on migration, including the conclusion of the long-pending EU-Nigeria Re-Admission Agreement.
This was the focus of discussions between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and the EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In a statement from her Media Aide, Magnus Eze, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria wants any deal to include reintegration support for returnees, infrastructure development assistance, and expanded legal pathways for Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
The EU delegation said it had incorporated these concerns into the proposed framework and outlined plans for a broader Migration and Security Cooperation Contract covering strategic dialogue on local talent partnerships, border management with Frontex, and intelligence sharing with Europol to fight transnational crime.
EU Commissioner Brunner is expected in Abuja in November for follow-up talks.
