13 KILLED AS SUSPECTED HERDERS ATTACK BENUE COMMUNITY

Police Deploy Tactical Teams to Restore Calm in Otukpo

MAKURDI — The Benue State Police Command has confirmed a deadly attack on Efeyi Community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area, where suspected armed herders reportedly killed at least 13 persons and injured several others.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has also displaced many residents, forcing families to flee their homes in search of safety.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Command, Edet Udeme, said police tactical teams, alongside other security agencies, have been deployed to the affected community to restore normalcy and prevent further attacks.

He assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the assault.

According to reports, the attackers, said to be heavily armed, stormed the community before dawn and opened fire on residents, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Community sources disclosed that at least 13 bodies have so far been recovered, while several injured victims are receiving treatment at various medical facilities.

Survivors described the attack as one of the most devastating incidents to hit the area in recent times, with many residents still unaccounted for as local volunteers and emergency responders continue search-and-rescue operations.

The incident has renewed calls on security agencies and government authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable communities across Benue State and ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while the situation remains fluid as security operatives intensify efforts to secure the area and prevent further violence.
