INEC RECOGNISES PROF. GOMBE AS SDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, MOVES TO END LEADERSHIP CRISIS
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded the name of Professor Abubakar Sadiq Umar Gombe as the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on its official portal, in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.
The development is seen as a decisive step in resolving the long-standing leadership dispute within the party.
In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, confirmed that INEC had previously restored the name of the former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, following an earlier Court of Appeal judgment, which the party described as incorrect in light of the Supreme Court decision.
According to the statement, INEC formally removed the names of the former chairman and other expelled members on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
The party said the latest action has effectively put to rest what it described as an externally induced leadership crisis, adding that the SDP now stands on a stronger footing ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
It further stated that the party remains committed to internal stability, unity, and strategic repositioning for future electoral contests.
