Court Grants Sowore ₦200m Bail in Cyberbullying Trial
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Omoyele Sowore in the sum of ₦200 million in an alleged cyberbullying case being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Delivering the ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to provide two sureties. One of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from his community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The court also directed Sowore to surrender his international passport to the Deputy Registrar pending the determination of the case.
The judge noted that both sureties must be verified by the prosecution counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde. The bail followed Sowore’s application after the court had earlier revoked his self-recognizance bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear for trial.
Justice Umar also dismissed an application seeking his withdrawal from the case on grounds of alleged bias. The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over alleged criminal defamation linked to social media posts in which he reportedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.”
The court adjourned the matter until July 6, 2026, for the continuation of hearing.
