CUSTOMS CLEARS AIR ON ₦62.2BN ALLEGED UNDER-REMITTANCE

The Nigeria Customs Service has clarified that the ₦62.2 billion identified as under-remittance in 2017 was made up of levies collected on behalf of other government agencies and not funds meant for remittance to the Federation Account.

The clarification was made during an investigative hearing of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts in response to an audit query raised by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation dating back to 2019.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, explained that while most levies collected by the Service are remitted to the Federation Account, some are specifically designated for other purposes, including levies on local production of wheat, textiles and wines.

The Customs management also informed the committee that it would meet with a sub-committee of the Senate to reconcile discrepancies and address issues that may have been inaccurately reflected in the audit report.
