FG Moves to Replace 6-3-3-4 System with 12-Year Basic Education Model

The Federal Government has proposed replacing Nigeria’s long-standing 6-3-3-4 education system with a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model aimed at improving access, retention and learning outcomes.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed the proposal during the inauguration of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Ministerial Implementation and Monitoring Committee in Abuja. He said the reform is designed to provide learners with 12 years of continuous basic education before progressing to tertiary institutions.

According to the minister, the proposed arrangement would eliminate transition barriers associated with the current junior and senior secondary school structure, while helping to reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.

Alausa noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen foundational learning and equip young Nigerians with skills needed for national development. He added that the proposal would undergo the necessary policy reviews and stakeholder consultations before implementation.
