Illegal Mining: House of Reps pledges tougher laws to protect extractive industry

‎The House of Representatives has vowed to strengthen Nigeria’s legal and institutional framework to combat illegal mining, describing the country’s extractive industry as too strategic to remain vulnerable to criminal networks and revenue leakages.

‎Lawmakers stated this at a Stakeholders Workshop on Extractive Industry Governance in Abuja convened by the House Ad Hoc Committee on Mineral Exploitation, Security and Anti-Money Laundering.

‎The committee is investigating the scale of illegal mining nationwide, tracing illicit financial flows, assessing security around mining communities and identifying legislative gaps requiring urgent intervention.

‎The committee says submissions from the workshop would form part of its final report to the House of Representatives for further legislative action.
