Makinde to corps members: embrace entrepreneurship, build the nation

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has charged corps members deployed to the state to see their service year as a call to national development, sacrifice and leadership.

The governor gave the charge on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch “C” Stream 1 corps members held at the Oyo State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin.

Makinde described the ceremony as not merely an administration of oath, but the beginning of a significant chapter of service, growth, leadership and national unity.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Ms Wasilat Adegoke, the governor noted that the NYSC scheme remains one of the greatest platforms for promoting national integration, cultural understanding and patriotic service.

The governor reiterated that the corps members are not merely beneficiaries of a national programme, but important partners in Nigeria’s development.

He particularly charged them to prioritise the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme deliberately designed to equip them beyond their academic degrees.

The governor urged the corps members to key into SAED to become wealth creators and approach the service year with discipline, dedication and an open mind.

Makinde assured them that his administration has consistently maintained its pace setting role in corps members’ welfare and would continue to make the state safe and create an enabling environment for young people to function.

Also, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Kayode Peters, described the orientation course as the first cardinal programme of the NYSC scheme, designed to equip corps members with relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes for service.

He urged the corps members to conduct themselves with discipline, respect constituted authority and make every moment of the three-week programme count.

The coordinator expressed profound appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support for the scheme, particularly the prompt payment of allowances to corps members serving in state agencies and the recent provision of 800 mattresses for the camp.

No fewer than 3,447 prospective corps members comprising 1,315 males and 2,132 females were administered the Oath of Allegiance.
