AFRICA HEALTHTECH SUMMIT: NIGERIA PUSHES CONNECTED DIGITAL HEALTH SYSTEM
Nigeria is calling for a shift from isolated digital health innovations to connected national systems capable of transforming healthcare delivery across Africa.
Speaking at the 5th Africa HealthTech Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, says Nigeria is building a digital health architecture designed to improve data sharing, service delivery and health outcomes.
For the minister, Nigeria’s National Digital Health Architecture seeks to replace fragmented systems with an interoperable ecosystem, built around the principle of “one patient, one health record.”
As artificial intelligence gains ground in healthcare, Dr Salako says Africa must first build reliable infrastructure, secure data and local capacity, stressing that the continent should develop, rather than simply consume, health technology.
Nigeria says the goal is not simply to digitise healthcare, but to build intelligent systems that can connect, learn, anticipate and respond, while ensuring technology improves access rather than widens existing gaps.
