MATERNAL, NEWBORN HEALTH: FG, PARTNERS LAUNCH INCENTIVES TO BOOST CARE

Behind every maternal mortality figure is a mother and newborn whose lives depend on timely access to healthcare.

The Federal Government and partners have launched an incentive programme to encourage more women to use essential maternal and newborn health services.

Flagged off by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the initiative seeks to address financial barriers and improve access to antenatal care, safe delivery and postnatal services.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths through stronger primary healthcare, improved financing and coordinated action.

The programme also builds on the MAMII initiative—Maternal and Newborn Mortality in Nigeria Initiative, which targets high-burden Local Government Areas with interventions including skilled birth attendance, emergency referrals and postnatal care.

Stakeholders say the success of the initiative will depend on translating funding into functional health facilities, skilled personnel, essential medicines and affordable care.

The goal is clear: ensure every mother receives timely care and every newborn gets a safe start to life.
