Nigeria Pushes Global Peace Initiative at UN Assembly
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on member states of the United Nations to incorporate the Preamble of the UN Charter into their national constitutions as a demonstration of commitment to global peace, justice and human rights.
Speaking through Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, at an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York, the President said such a move would serve as a constant reminder of nations’ obligations to uphold peace, human rights, justice and international cooperation.
Ambassador Ibrahim presented the proposal ahead of President Tinubu’s participation in the UN General Assembly session scheduled for September. He noted that the suggestion received positive reactions from delegates and was consistent with the views expressed by permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The UN Charter Preamble commits member states to saving future generations from the scourge of war and promoting justice, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among nations.
