NIGERIA TARGETS $6.7TN AFCFTA MARKET

The Federal Government has signaled a major push to reposition Nigeria’s agriculture for the $6.7 trillion African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who stated this at the Sterling Agriculture Summit in Abuja, said Africa’s challenge is no longer production but value creation.

He said the continent must build processing capacity, logistics, financing and trade systems that allow free flow of goods.

The Minister emphasized that a processor in Nigeria should be able to build for Accra, Abidjan, Dakar and Nairobi as confidently as for Lagos and Kano.

Kyari said full implementation of AfCFTA is projected to raise intra-African agricultural trade by 574 percent by 2030, warning that a continental food economy cannot thrive while African producers remain trapped in fragmented national markets.
