OYO POLICE ARREST SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBER, RECOVER STOLEN MOTORCYCLE IN IBADAN

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle in Ibadan as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle violent crime across the state.

The arrest followed an attack on a commercial motorcyclist, Muhammadu Kamilu, who was allegedly assaulted and dispossessed of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle by a passenger along Adeniji Estate, Apata, Ibadan.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred on July 16, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m. when the Command received credible information from a concerned citizen regarding the attack.

The statement explained that operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were immediately deployed to the area, leading to the arrest of the suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu.

Police also recovered the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as an iron hammer allegedly used in carrying out the robbery.

The victim reportedly sustained injuries during the attack. A good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who intervened in an attempt to rescue the motorcyclist, was also injured.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital where they received medical treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly confessed to operating as a lone armed robber targeting commercial motorcyclists within Ibadan and surrounding communities.

The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s involvement in other robbery incidents and to recover additional exhibits linked to his activities.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the courage of the good Samaritan and the vigilance of residents whose timely information aided the successful operation.

He urged members of the public to remain security conscious and continue supporting law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities and individuals.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through intelligence-led and proactive policing strategies aimed at ensuring that criminal elements are apprehended and brought to justice.
