TROOPS REPULSE ISWAP ATTACK ON BORNO BASE, RECOVER WEAPONS

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on August 15, 2026, when the insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the military base from two directions. However, troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion detected the movement through early warning and surveillance systems and swiftly deployed a combat team to intercept the advancing terrorists.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the troops engaged one group of the attackers in a fierce gun battle and successfully repelled them. Another group attempted to infiltrate the camp through a different route but was met with superior firepower and forced to retreat.

Captain Goni stated that the troops immediately launched a pursuit operation after the terrorists fled, exploiting the contact area and withdrawal routes. During the operation, several terrorists were neutralised, while a cache of weapons and military equipment was recovered.

Items recovered from the terrorists included AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with bombs and chargers, a camcorder video camera and other combat equipment.

The military spokesman disclosed that surveillance footage later showed the fleeing insurgents dragging away the bodies of some of their members who were killed during the encounter toward the Timbuktu Triangle area.

Notably, no casualty was recorded among the troops during the operation.

The Theatre Command commended the officers and soldiers of the 162 Amphibious Battalion for their courage, professionalism and tactical efficiency, noting that the successful operation reflects the high level of preparedness and combat effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI troops.

Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against insurgents and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-East region.
