NCOS, TRADITIONAL RULERS STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP FOR OFFENDER REINTEGRATION

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has reaffirmed the critical role of traditional institutions in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.

In a statement, the Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, says the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, stated this while receiving two traditional rulers on separate courtesy visits to the Service Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the statement, the Gomo of Kuje, Haruna Tanko Jibrin, pledged the continued support of the Kuje traditional institution and emphasized the need for collaboration between host communities and custodial centres in promoting peace and security.

Also, the Paramount Ruler of the Kajju Traditional Council, Luka Kogi Yabuwat, a retired correctional officer, called for greater community support for the reintegration of former inmates, warning against stigmatisation and social exclusion.

The Controller-General noted that effective correctional services go beyond custodial facilities, stressing that families, communities and traditional leaders have vital roles to play in ensuring successful rehabilitation, reducing recidivism and building safer communities.
