UI DON, PROFESSOR OLULEYE URGES ENGINEERS TO EMBRACE AI, ADAPTABILITY FOR FUTURE RELEVANCE.

 

 

Professor Ayodeji Emmanuel Oluleye, a pioneer of Industrial Engineering at the University of Ibadan (UI), has called on Nigerian engineers to integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and data analytics into their practice to stay competitive in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

Speaking at his valedictory lecture titled “ On the N- Year Industrial Engineering Tower Duty Tour and a Gentle Invitation to Change,” He  emphasized that technical knowledge alone is no longer sufficient.

He urged the next generation of engineers to blend technical expertise with human adaptability, critical thinking, and ethical judgment to solve practical societal problems.

Prof. Oluleye emphasized that beyond technical competence, engineers must cultivate critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical judgment to effectively address real-world challenges.

The retiring professor challenged graduates not to be content with acquiring technical knowledge alone but to focus on applying their skills to solve practical problems and drive societal development.

Reflecting on his 44-year journey at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Oluleye recounted how his career took him from the classroom and laboratory to institutional leadership roles, spanning farms, administrative offices, digital networks, and various systems within the university.

According to him, the experience provided a holistic understanding of how institutions function and reinforced the importance of productivity, maintenance culture, and modernization in achieving sustainable progress.

“Whether the task involved scheduling production, working with people, or converting ideas into practical improvements, the goal remained the same to make systems work better for the people they serve,”

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode  Adebowale, commended Prof. Oluleye for his outstanding contributions to the institution.

“The University is grateful for your mentorship, innovation, adaptability, and impact on the institution and the wider society,”

 

Speakers at the event described Prof. Oluleye, one of the founding members of the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering, as a versatile academic whose absence would be greatly felt within the university community.

 

Family members, friends, clergy, colleagues, and members of the academic community attended the event in honour of the retiring scholar.

Born on September 18, 1956, in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, Prof. Oluleye joined the University of Ibadan as an Assistant Lecturer on December 1, 1981, and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Industrial Engineering on October 1, 2002.

His academic career covered key areas including Engineering Economics, Engineering Management, Production Scheduling and Inventory Systems, Systems Simulation, Computer-Aided Manufacturing, Manufacturing Information Systems, Leadership, and Interface Management.

 

He has also supervised more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate projects, dissertations, and theses.

 

Prof. Oluleye retired from the service of the University of Ibadan after 44 years of meritorious service to the institution and the nation at large.
