YOBE APPROVES BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE TO BOOST HEALTHCARE INNOVATION

The Yobe State Government has approved the establishment of the Yobe Institute of Biomedical Engineering Technology (YIBET) as part of efforts to promote healthcare innovation, technical education and human capital development in the state.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, gave the approval in a statement signed by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje.
According to the statement, the initiative was driven by the increasing global demand for skilled professionals in biomedical and clinical engineering, with the institute expected to serve as a centre of excellence in the field.

To ensure the successful take-off of the institute, Governor Buni has constituted a Steering Committee to oversee planning and implementation.
The government said the establishment of YIBET aligns with projections by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the global shortage of biomedical and clinical engineering professionals.
The institute, when established, is expected to provide training, innovation and capacity development in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering Technology, while equipping young Nigerians with globally relevant technical skills.

The state government said the initiative would position Yobe as a hub for producing skilled manpower needed by Nigeria and the West African sub-region in healthcare technology and related sectors.
Officials described the approval as another milestone in Governor Buni’s development agenda, which focuses on investment in education, strengthening healthcare delivery, creating opportunities for young people and building a knowledge-driven economy.
The Steering Committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, while the Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University, Damaturu, will serve as Vice Chairman.

Other members include representatives from the Ministries of Higher Education, Health and Human Services, Budget and Economic Planning, Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Yobe State Specialist Hospital, Nigerian Society of Biomedical Engineering (Yobe State Chapter), School of Biomedical Engineering, University of Maiduguri, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, as well as Dr. Abdulkareem Karasuwa, SFHEA, as Technical Consultant.

The Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, will serve as Secretary to the committee.
