JUST IN: OYO GOVERNMENT DECLARES TUESDAY WORK-FREE DAY

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448 AH.

The declaration is aimed at enabling Muslim faithful in the state to celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year and engage in prayers for peace, unity, and progress of Oyo State and Nigeria.

The state government congratulated Muslims on witnessing another Islamic New Year and urged them to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, which symbolize sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and devotion to God.

The government also called on residents to use the occasion to promote peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and mutual understanding among all citizens, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.

Public servants and workers in state-owned establishments are expected to observe the work-free day, while essential service providers are advised to continue rendering their duties as required.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, a significant event in Islamic history. Oyo State has consistently observed the occasion with a work-free day in recognition of its importance to the Muslim community.
