BENUE BOAT TRAGEDY: NSIB BEGINS INVESTIGATION

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an on-the-spot safety assessment in Wadata, Benue State, following a boat accident that claimed 11 lives.
The Director-General of the Bureau, Captain Alex Badeh, led a team of investigators to the scene as part of efforts to determine the causes of the incident and prevent a recurrence.
The team was received by the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ode, and later met with Governor Hyacinth Alia, who commended NSIB’s swift response and called for a stronger Bureau presence to enhance safety advocacy along the River Benue.

Captain Badeh commiserated with the families of the victims and stressed that many waterway accidents are preventable through improved safety awareness, responsible operations, and stronger collaboration among stakeholders.
As part of the investigation, the team engaged boat operators and community leaders to gather first-hand accounts and assess local safety practices and challenges on the waterways.
The NSIB said the ongoing investigation is aimed at producing recommendations that will strengthen safety standards and improve safety culture on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
