FG REMOVES DATA COSTS FOR STUDENTS ON APPROVED LEARNING PLATFORMS

The Federal Government has announced the removal of data charges for students accessing approved digital learning platforms across the country as part of efforts to expand access to quality education.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this at the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria.

He said the programme is designed to ensure that internet costs do not prevent students from benefiting from digital learning opportunities.

According to the Minister, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and aims to bridge educational gaps by making learning resources more accessible to students regardless of their location or economic background.

Alausa explained that under the scheme, students will be able to access approved educational content without incurring data charges, effectively transforming digital devices into learning hubs.

He noted that factors such as poverty, inadequate infrastructure and geographical barriers should no longer stand in the way of education.

The Minister also revealed plans by the government to introduce regulated internet access for children under the age of 16 as part of measures to enhance online safety and child protection.

He called on telecommunications operators, regulators and other stakeholders in the education sector to support the successful implementation of the initiative.

Alausa said the goal is to build an inclusive education system that guarantees equal learning opportunities for every Nigerian child.
