President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated renowned playwright, poet and scholar, Professor Femi Osofisan, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most brilliant literary minds.

In a statement issued on Sunday, President Tinubu said Osofisan represents “the full expression of the abundance of talent,” noting that his works have consistently addressed societal challenges while advocating moral renewal.

The President highlighted Osofisan’s contributions as a playwright, poet, novelist, teacher and columnist, adding that his creative works have enriched Nigerian and global literature.

He noted that the celebrated academic’s novella Maami was adapted into a film directed by Tunde Kelani in 2011, further expanding his influence in the arts and entertainment sector.

Tinubu recalled that Osofisan was born in Erunwon, Ogun State, and educated at Government College, Ibadan, and the University of Ibadan, where he studied French before proceeding to the Sorbonne in Paris for postgraduate studies.

He further noted that Osofisan retired as a professor at the University of Ibadan and was honoured in 2016 with the prestigious Thalia Prize by the International Association of Theatre Critics in recognition of his contributions to theatre arts.

The President commended the scholar for his dedication to teaching, scholarship and national development, describing him as a strong advocate of societal renewal.

Tinubu wished the literary icon continued good health and greater wisdom, while joining his family, friends and the literary community in celebrating his 80th birthday anniversary.
